Post War years

The post-war years were the most active period, the last 25 years leading up to 1970/75.
Joseph Rosenthal was an American photographer who created the iconic photograph during the second world war, ‘Raising the flag at Iwo Jima’, the photograph was taken during the battle of Iwo Jima. Rosenthal saw marines raising the flag but he was too late to photograph it when it actually happened, so the actual photograph was staged, he asked them to raise it again. The photograph shows determination, independence and struggle. The photograph was that iconic it was made into a sculpture.

Robert Frank was an important figure in American photography and film, most notable for his work ‘The Americans’. Frank photographed America on how it actually looked and not how people wanted it to look, he was looking at the underbelly of the Americans. Throughout the book in the American flag which keeps it together. Frank also saw the diversion between the wealthy and the poor, not classes.

Towards the end of the post war years became Fashion photography, especially in the 1960’s, the 60’s was probably very well known for the photographers of the time and the fashion.
Photographers such as David Bailey, Richard Avedon and William Klein.
David Bailey used a twin lens reflex camera, this cropped the image and was very different as to what was seen before, giving the photographs a whole new feel.
The womens liberation movement happened in the 1960’s and the independence of women was brought about, and mainly due to the new contraceptive pill. This influenced fashion photography at the time, creating a whole new image, especially in the eyes of Bailey who went against all the rules and photographed fashion how he wanted.
