The Hug by
Nan Goldin
Darsie
Alexander has reviewed a photograph by Nan Goldin in full detail exploring
expressive details of the image. ‘The Hug’, was presented in New York City
1980. ‘The Hug’ is part of a collection called ‘The Ballad of Sexual
Dependency’, which has been described more in depth by Darsie.
Darsie
evaluates the image rather well through this review. Essentially she gets more
in depth, looks more within the meaning of the term and physical action of ‘the
Hug’ itself. Each segment is fairly opinionated on this image however the
research of Goldin has been done well considering that Darsie has included the
collection project of ‘The Ballad of Sexual Dependency’ that had captured
Darsie’s eye from the beginning, a few images stuck out for her more than the
others.
She controls
the argument of explaining how photographs interrupt personal lives on a daily
bases, as photographers we try to capture that emotion within our images without
spoiling the final image.
Expressions
are the main feeling through-out reading this review. ‘The Hug, a name that is also an action; a full-on embrace given
without worries or fear or self-consciousness or pride’. This quote taken
from a segment is the truth to what everyone feels a hug should be and what is
shown through the image regardless of the faceless people which Darsie explains
that does not matter however it makes one curious.
Darsie has pointed out the numerous images of hugs through-out Goldin’s project. Darsie is feeling she takes these images as if to catch an emotion that she has not yet known of as most images speak for themselves when evaluating. Overall Darsie has evaluated this image rather uniquely, exploring different parts of the photograph, as well as her project that was presented with it.
